Advanced Skills for the Right Hand

Sautillé

In a fast spiccato, also called sautille or saltando, the bow is moved very quickly and naturally rebounds off the string. This type of spiccato can only be played in the middle part of the bow.

The camber point is approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches towards the tip from the balance point. This is the point at which the bow can most easily be controlled.

Sautille can be approached by beginning with short detaché strokes at the camber point. As the bow moves faster, if the weight from the index finger and pinky is lessened, the bow will begin to leave the string all by itself. The player simply guides the bow as it bounces. The motion comes from loose wrist and fingers - not the arm.
